Rose Umerlik’s luminous paintings are highly personal. From the beginning of each piece, she reveals shapes, lines and bodies of color that become symbols of her personal history. By layering graphite lines and staining the surface with color, she works through numerous ideas before settling into a “story”. She will flesh out these “moments” with thicker layers of paint, and use opacity to direct the viewer to what she finds to be powerful and evocative.
Stories of family, relationships, and self-awareness generate forces of emotion that intuitively drive the creation of each painting. Rose sees her work as a metaphor for the universality of what it is to be human. “We are all complicated, thinking, feeling and profoundly connected in a beautiful way that celebrates human consciousness."
